3 rules I live by…(or try to)

I know you all want to know….Where is Lincoln today?  He has been busy destroying a toy.  Somehow he got all these pieces apart.  No idea how he did that.  I was too busy feeding Nolan to pay attention.  Oh well, at least it wasn’t another sharpie mishap.  I know you are also dying to know did I use the toothpaste to remove the sharpie.

Actually no.  It’s still on my table because I have just been too busy to do anything about it.  And the fact that I never really have anyone come to my house so I don’t have to make it perfect.  If you need to come over, make an appointment so I can make sure that it’s sharpie free and spotless.  Make it a week in advance so I have time to actually make it look presentable because that’s how long it will take.

I get asked all the time “How do you do it all?”  The truth is I don’t do it all.  I’ve learned that no one person can do it all.  I can only do bits and pieces and do it well.

This school year, I have made three rules I do live by to help me.

  1.  Leave work at three unless I NEED to stay.  I know people think teachers stay late a lot and that’s true.  I feel like my work is never done.  There is always something going on, but the truth is that the work will be there tomorrow.  I try and make the most of my planning time and if I need more time I come in early.  I would rather come in early (which I do A LOT) than stay late.  My kids are not up early, but they do need me in the afternoon so working early instead of late is better for me.
  2. Leave ALL work at school.  Last year I tried to take my work home and I even did this at the beginning of this year.  The truth is the time with my kids is important and I don’t live to work, I work to live.  See again, make the most of my time at work count so I don’t need to bring it home, or come in early to do stuff.
  3. GO TO SLEEP.  This one is harder for me.  Especially this week.  Nolan and Ems decided to party in the middle of the night two nights in a row so we didn’t get much sleep.  However, I do LOVE naps and take them when I can ( and my husband lets me!!).  I try to be in my bed no later than 8:30.  I wake up most days between 5-5:30.  Sleep is critical when I spend all day with kids.

I also thought I would get smart and give up coffee and caffeine but if we are being real that’s not happening.  I thrive on the stuff.  Some of my students can even tell you how many cups I drink a day (It’s two).  On the weekends, it’s one.  I only have four to five instead of 18 so less caffeine is needed.

And lastly, ALWAYS recruit help…
